The formation of our Solar System began around 4.6 billion years ago when a giant cloud of gas and dust known as a solar collapsed under its own gravity this collapse was likely triggered by a nearby supernova explosion which sent shockwaves through space as the nebula shrank it started to spin faster and flatten into a disk shape most of the material gathered at the center forming the sun while the rest spread out across the disk in the cooler outer regions of this disk tiny particles of dust and ice began to stick together gradually building up larger objects called planet these planet collided and merged eventually forming the planets.
Closer to the Sun where it was too hot for ice to form rocky planets like Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars took shape in the cooler regions gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn and ice giants like Uranus and Neptune formed from a mix of gas ice and dust the leftover material in the Solar System formed smaller objects like asteroids comets and moons the sun powerful solar wind cleared away any remaining gas and the solar System settled into the stable system we observe today with planets orbiting the sun and moons orbiting many of the planets.

The Early Atmosphere and Oceans:
The atmosphere and oceans were very different from what we have today when the planet was still forming volcanic eruptions were constant releasing huge amounts of gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and small amounts of other gases like methane and ammonia there was no oxygen in the atmosphere and the planet surface was too hot for water to stay in liquid form the early earth was a hostile place with frequent volcanic activity and a thick toxic atmosphere as earth began to cool the water vapor in the air started to condense forming clouds.
These early oceans were made up of water that had been released from volcanic gases along with minerals and chemicals from the Earth crust the atmosphere began to change with carbon dioxide being absorbed by the oceans and rocks while nitrogen remained a key part of the air the early atmosphere and oceans created the conditions needed for life to eventually emerge the water in the oceans became the perfect place for the first living organisms to form, setting the stage for the planet future evolution.

The development of Earth surface was a slow but crucial process that took millions of years in the beginning the planet was mostly molten with a hot liquid surface as Earth began to cool down the outer layer solidified into a thin solid crust but the planet surface was still unstable earth crust was constantly shifting and cracking due to internal heat and pressure causing volcanic eruptions and the formation of mountains these eruptions released gases and minerals into the atmosphere which further shaped the environment time the Earth crust became more stable but it was still divided into large pieces known as tectonic plates.
This movement caused major geological features like mountain ranges, deep ocean trenches and large faults when tectonic plates collided they formed mountains while areas where plates separated often created deep valleys or new oceans water played a huge role in shaping earth surface as well rain, rivers and oceans slowly eroded the land wearing down mountains and creating valleys and plains the movement of water also helped form the planet coastlines and shaped the first continents these processes created the diverse and dynamic surface we see today with continents, oceans and a variety of landscapes that support life.
